even if you do not have space to grow pumpkins yourself, the roasted meat freezes wonderfully well.
I end up doing a couple of weeks of massive pumpkin roasting and freezing in the fall. Then for the rest of the winter and into the spring, all the pumpkin pies ( thanksgiving, christmas, Alex's birthday, just becuase); breads and other pumpkin dishes we want to make ( soup anyone??) all come from home grown pumpkin. I freeze in 2 cup portions, since so many recipes call for 2 cups of pumpkin, then combine for things like soup.. Next year we add root veggies back into the garden. Last year we had a bunch of sweet potatoes as well, but this year all of our root veggies ( including radishes, even) suffered badly. Next year, it will be a better year, hopefully. However, I have enough zucchini frozen to feed an army for a month, and put up 70 quarts of pickles ( that family of plants loved the garden this ear...)

I love being able to go out in the garden, pick some spinach and make a salad. Or braise with ginger. or mix in with fat free mashed potatoes, or...

I only managed to get the herbs (and lots of them) from my garden this year, but much of the rest of the meal did come from local markets.
I'm seriously thinking of growing sugar pumpkins next year; they're so, so good and while they were available, I was cooking about one a week.
