Weekend Over

May 16, 2011 00:27

► For the past two days the right side of my ribcage has been aching. Enough that it's been making it difficult for me to fall asleep. It started late Friday night (early Saturday morning), coincidentally when the weather suddenly became incredibly cold and damp. It is a coincidence, right?

► Talk about unexpected. Dean asked me to phone and order supper for her around 5:00pm. About 10 minutes later the apartment was buzzed. I happened to be in the front room so I picked up the apartment phone but there was no reply. Figuring it was Dean's food, I buzzed them in and went to the door, picking up her money to pay. When I opened the door, I was surprised to see a 30-something Middle-Eastern couple with two young kids coming up the stairs toward me.

Dumbfounded (and still holding Deana's money), the woman handed me her cellphone. On the other end of the line was the landlord. He asked me to let them into the apartment next to us (vacated by the weird previous tenant(s) a couple of weeks ago, and show them around. He said that the apartment was actually unlocked, and to tell the couple that it would be available next month. I handed the phone back to the woman and let them into the apartment. Deana just looked at me from the couch, confused.

What I saw in the apartment was just weird. There's a bed in the middle of the front living room, with a messy fitted sheet over the mattress. The only other piece of furniture is an open messy fold out couch bed in the larger bedroom. When the guy left a couple of weeks ago, he took only a few full garbage bags and luggage bags, no furniture. This means when the woman and little girl were there for awhile last fall along with the guy, this was all the furniture they had. The bathroom has some bathing stuff (shampoo, bodywash, and at least 4 or 5 loofah scrunches hanging from the shower head), but other than that the rooms were empty. Save for a black suit hanging in the open front entrance closet, a pair of men's dress shoes, a carrying bag, and some sort of thick leather day planner thing on the front room bed. Oh, and a pile of internet cables and modems. It's the kind of stuff left when people take off in a hurry. Really, it looked like the apartment was used as a squat.

I will say that I'm envious of the laminate "hard wood" floors through most of the apartment, and the non-disgusting laminate flooring in the kitchen/dining area. The Bathroom also has all new features and looks a hell of a lot more inviting than our still disgusting bathroom. That the walls were painted helps too. We really got the short end of the stick when we moved in 3 years ago, to the unwashed, dirty, stained, soiled, damaged unit we have.

It was better when the apartment was just a mystery to me, and I didn't know. Oh, Algernon...

► Because I can't resist making lists, here are the 11 tradepaperbacks I ordered from Amazon.ca last night. Two of the books I had to order from a seller store, however, because Amazon didn't have them available.► Showcase Presents: The Witching Hour, Vol 1
Showcase Presents: Superman Family, Vol 3
Captain America: Reborn
Captain America: Two Americas
Planetary, Vol 4: Spacetime Archaeology
Jack Staff, Vol 3: Echoes Of Tomorrow
Jack Staff, Vol 4: Rocky Realities (seller store)
Invincible, Vol 6: A Different World
Invincible, Vol 7: Three's Company (seller store)
Invincible, Vol 8: My Favorite Martian
Invincible, Vol 9: Out Of This World
All of the books (which divided into 5 parcels) are listed as "shipping soon". My guess is the 3 parcels from Amazon itself should arrive via UPS by Tuesday, and the 2 seller bought books will arrive in two weeks, separately. I'll still be missing Invincible volumes 10 through 14, and might order those at the beginning of next month. It'll be nice to get caught up on Jack Staff, as I really enjoyed the first two volumes when I got them 4 or 5 years ago.

Will Smith's 53-foot trailer, named "The Heat," angers SoHo residents as he films Men In Black III - Funny, I've never wanted to punch Will Smith in the balls before now.

Mystery Man Revealed: Hugh Grant Almost Replaced Charlie Sheen On 'Men' - I would have started watching the show, on purpose.

Brazilian TV Show: Soap Soccer - I wish this aired here.
