Sadly, The Most Shaking My Bed Has Ever Experienced

Jun 24, 2010 00:23

► Had a shower this morning, got dressed, and decided to get a bit of sleep a little after 10:00am. I was in a really deep sleep when I was jostled awake at 1:40pm, my bed shaking. Since I was really groggy I thought Deana or my father was trying to wake me up, until I realized the whole room was shaking. I couldn't really hear anything other than a faint rumbling, and since my room was darkened with the blinds closed I had no idea what was going on at first. There was some momentary panic when I thought I should run to the door frame, but the tremor was over after 10 seconds. Surprised the hell out of me that none of my action figures or knick knacks fell off of my shelves. The whole thing did leave me disoriented and dizzy for about an hour, but I feel better.

So an earthquake hit South-Eastern Ontario and South-Western Quebec (my city, Cornwall, in the center of that). The initial reports I saw had it a 5.5 magnitude quake, but apparently they're now saying it was only a 5.0. By the coverage on the news you'd swear bombs went off in Toronto, but there was no damage anywhere, and buildings were only evacuated as a precaution. Always with the overreacting in Toronto.

Dad called me a little after 2:00pm to do some stuff for him online. He had no idea there was any quake since it apparently hit when he was crossing the bridges, at the time it hit, returning from a golf outing across the border.

► Three links: J. Michael Straczynski on SUPERMAN #700 and beyond and JMS Enlists America For "Superman: Grounded" and JMS Grounds Superman: The Man of Steel gets back to his roots and tours America. - Three different articles regarding J. Michael Straczynski's upcoming 12 issue Superman storyline where Superman decides to reconnect with America by walking across the nation interacting with regular folks. I appreciate the notion of reconnecting Superman with his roots, but this seems ironically closed minded given our increasingly global-village world. Some of JMS's quotes in the first article even read (sugar coated) like "Non-Americans not wanted". And really, 12 issues of potentially morose naval-gazing doesn't sound all that interesting, especially since many stories have already dealt with Superman dealing with his limited ability to solve humanity's problems.*

Of course there's always the chance that this could turn out to be a great, fun, Capraesque story. With guys in colourful caped strongman suits of course.

* This story kicks off by a woman slapping Superman for not saving her husband from dying of a brain tumor while he, Superman, was in space saving the world. Again. It's not like he was out drinking.

Helen Mirren poses topless for New York magazine - Awww, no bush? :-(

Hunting the Arizona lion burger butcher - Rather creepy story of back alley exotic meat sellers and animal skinners with surplus meat. Does Aslan know about this?

Quote of the Moment

Philip Emmenthal: Imagine a world where nothing is stable. In the West, we have three moving elements: Air, Fire, Water... but at least we can depend on the fourth.
