I need your help, japanoglots!

What's the difference between -dan and -gumi? They're both collectives but one seems more regimented/militant and the other more generic.
Can someone clarify usage for me?

-dan (think Rocket-dan or Daigurren-dan or even SOS-dan) basically means "team".

-gumi could mean "class of" (as in san-nen A-gumi, Fanta CM anyone?) or refer to casual grouping (go-nin-gumi).

I don't profess to be an expert (or insane otaku to that end o.O), but I just finished 301 with a B+ so I think this is reliable enough info...

Yeah, I just started there not too long ago, and I've only played the actual game for about two weeks. So I'm very new.
