There's nothing even remotely similar to that in the New World.

Last time I checked, much of Western Europe was included in the 'New World' you mention...

I had much the same reaction as you! The French entry was crazy - I think they take it less seriously than we do, if that's possible. I was shocked that they included English lyrics. I was knitting while watching the show, and when the Ukraine entry came on, I just stopped, mid-movement, and sat staring.

I even had the same reaction to Russia :D

I didn't mind our song (in this context, I hasten to add!). It was very Euro-camp trashy gimmick and we've certainly done worse.

People over here don't believe me when I tell them how political and xenophobic the Eurovision Song Contest really is. It's one of the things I really miss.
