Preface: This post is going to be about a bad experience I had with, specifically, the Orthodox Jewish establishment in Israel, which is technically the only kind of state-recognized Judaism there is here. This country sometimes, I swear.

A good friend of mine is getting married on Friday, and she asked me to go to mikveh with her last night.

Urgh, how awful and hurtful for your poor friend! That really sucks.

It did. At least now I know, sigh. I'm a little surprised at myself that I wasn't aware this happened until now.

That is completely horrible.

Being reform myself (and not all that observant even as a reform Jew) I have never been to a mikvah. My only knowledge of it is my late grandma, who apparently refused to go a mikvah as soon as she got to this country. Her comment - "Oi, that dirty water" said with a heavy Yiddish accent. My grandma was quite the rebel.

Now you have me wondering whether my grandmother ever went to mikveh - somehow I doubt it, but as she got married after the state was already founded, it's possible that this system already existed and she would have had to. I'll have to ask her that.
