Olympics, oh man, how great is this event. Even more than the practicality, I love the idea of it so much; ten thousand athletes, the entire world coming together for three weeks of competition, celebrating such incredible individual achievement, indulging in national pride. I love how for these three weeks, my country is just as invested in female ( Read more... )

Yes, not only is it the highest number of countries ever competing (plus several independent athletes), but the first time ever they've all fielded women athletes. I'm loving every single second of it and I can't watch every sport at once.

I'm watching the football at the moment - rooting for Canada!

And Yay for Mars and Yay for Sam Seaborne.

Haha, sorry for Canada then :-) *pats*

I try to catch as much as I can on TV or streaming, but it's hard at work -- I only tune in for special events (is Israeli participation) during the day. Luckily a lot of the interesting events take place in the evening. Like pole vault, what a crazy amazing sport.

Gutted for Canada, but the final should be good.

I'm out of the office so much that there's not much I can see during the day. The college has set up viewing rooms where we can watch with our manager's permission. I saw the diving last week (and got a load of work done because the phone wasn't going all the time!). I've got the day off on Friday, so I'll watch as much as I can then.

Diving is so gorgeous. It's nice that you have someplace to watch at work! There's a TV in our cafeteria so we can always watch "legitimately" during lunch, at least.

YES! It's like the moment at the end of Independence Day where all the nations have bonded together to kill the aliens.

Do you have any opinion on whether the Olympics should have had a moment of silence for the Israeli athletes killed in 1972?

Haha yes, although the end of Independence Day has just sliiightly more of an American tilt.

To be honest, I don't, really. I think it would have been meaningful if they'd had something, but I didn't feel wronged that they didn't.

So do the Olympics if you watch them in the US :)

I was just curious because a lot of the local papers have been talking about it.

Hallo! Beautiful photos, as always. And holy wow, that is a gorgeous headdress - is that Egyptian, do you know? The one before the duck photo.

Funny, I saw that pole vault just before I read your post. Yay tape delay. (Not.) I've enjoyed watching the daytime coverage on weekends and wish I could do it on weekdays too instead of having to suffer through the primetime coverage which is broken up and late and overdramatic and doesn't always include the sports I'm most passionate about.

Oh well. Life's problems should all be so small.

Thank you! :D I have no idea, actually. It does look like an Egyptian design, doesn't it? My assumption was that the group was made of Ethiopians, but I can't vouch for the fashion...

And aw, sucks :/ Things here have mostly been interesting for me, except for, well, now, when they're showing a men's soccer game probably because one of the teams is Brazil while TRACK IS GOING ON RIGHT NEXT DOOR. I could always watch the online streams, but I enjoy it a lot more with commentary. Like you said, though, this is definitely a case of... oh well.

Thanks :D I got a new ND filter, which is basically like sunglasses for your lens, and this was my first time testing it out. Success :-)
