LOL, today at the office I played David Cook's cover of Billie Jean on my laptop. The conversation I expected to have:

Anyone: Oh, hey, that's cool. Who is that?
Me: It's a cover from American Idol, and I am not going to apologize for that.

Conversation that actually happened:

Girl across from me: OH MY GOD is that DAVID COOK? If you put Always ( Read more... )

Yes :-) Some things about the job itself are a little stressy, but I really enjoy the office environment with the people I work with, which feels... important.

So is the fic set in one of those Roman-Empire-never-fell parallel universes?

It doesn't set out to take place in any specific time or place on Earth. There are "countries" and "kingdoms", aristocrats and slaves of different kinds, with elements from different points in European history. This is what we in slaveficland call a "vaguely historical setting" :-)

Yeah, but on which continent does it take place? Is aristocracy hereditary, or is it something which can be achieved through economic mobility? Is everyone speaking English or is it translated for the readers' benefit?

See, I want to read a fic - hell, an ongoing series of novels - where these questions are asked before the story's written, but from your rec, I don't know if those elements are there, so I'm hesitant to start. You make it sound like most of the story's emphasis is on sexuality and those relationships, and maybe there's more that I just haven't been told about.

I'm not sure what the answers to your questions are. I found this world captivating because of what the characters were doing in it, not because of the worldbuilding itself. Like I said, specific times and places aren't mentioned at all; the closest I can give you is that it's probably a European setting and that they have rifles, timewise. Most of the story's emphasis is on the relationships between the characters and their road from slavery to being people who free slaves.

Oh, good, you liked it! I don't know what it is about slave!fic that makes it so hit or miss for me compared to other h/c tropes, but there it is.

I did not start /o\ It looks great, I know, and I promise I'll read. I even thought about it while reading this fic (which I liked, yes :D :D). WHY A WIP THOUGH >:(

Because if I have to suffer through an excruciatingly extended but ultimately gorgeous WIP I need you to suffer with me! And also listen to me when I want to over-analyze it! Obviously!

Um. Also. I kind of forget to keep my phone on me sometimes, which I am told is annoying for people who try to get in touch. I know, I don't get it either. But I'll call you later, is what I'm saying.
