so I say thank you for the music

So the Life on Mars finale has made me think about other TV moments I love, where the music playing in the background just becomes kind of wired to my brain, forever inseparable from the particular scene in which it appeared, because together with the image they just create this perfect TV moment, that I respond to even years later on an ( Read more... )

I won't name any names, because I can't remember the episode titles or even the song titles (fail), but I have a distinct memory of a House ep in which the final scene is House relaxing in his chair at the office, wearing large headphones and listening to some heartbreaking, soulful jazz. I can't even remember the scene, I just have that picture in my head, and the memory of the jazz singer's rich, sad bass voice thrumming through my speakers.

As a matter of fact, House M.D. has a tendency to end episodes with touching musical crescendos and shots of Hugh Laurie staring soulfully out windows or such. :)

I think you're referring to the episode DNR from S1, where House treats a legendary jazz musician -- who, well, signs a DNR :-) Maybe not, though, I haven't seen S1 in a looong time ( ... )

Hello!
Saw you on copperbadge's journal -- we share a country, some political views and some fandoms, and I am utterly amazed by that Discworld/Khad Gadya crossover. Can I stalk you?

LOL, sure, it's the internet -- stalking's what it's all about, no one'll shoot you. Ma ze po, Chicago? (Look I HAD TO, okay? :-))

And hee, thank you for the feedback! Death is ♥.

Well, I'm in Jerusalem; ought to be worse. And yeah -- Death is just about the only reason I read Discworld. :D

Consider yourself stalked, then! *grows roots* *and trunk, of course, otherwise there would be no stalks*

Oh, Becoming! *Best* season finale ever. EVER.

House has a very interesting way of using music. The S1 finale, for instance - You Can't Always Get What You Want. Or, this finale - As Tears Go By; the soaring music as they cut alternately to House and the wedding. It makes me CRY. (Okay, I have a weakness for the Rolling Stones.)

Also, BSG. 'Kobol's Last Gleaming's opening sequence, playing Passacaglia. Exodus II, with the war drums as the humans begin to escape - and then the piercing bagpipe as Galactica jumps into the atmosphere, with a flash of yellow light (my favourite BSG scene EVER).

House and music -- like I tols miarr above, I have a bit of a problem with it, because the way they usually use music is for touching montages at the end of episodes, and considering the cynical nature of the show itself, I enjoy those montages, but they also feel kind of out of place for me. And the songs and the moments themselves aren't as memorable, to me, as the examples I gave, which is why House didn't make it into my top list.

Exceptions to this are episodes that end with HL playing the piano, because, my heart, there is only so much it can stand without melting. HL playing Silent Night, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, Hymn to Freedom, and -- what is apparently called, on Youtube, Cuddy's Serenade ♥. Ugh, HL, how are you so amazing ( ... )
