SGA characters FTW

Over the weekend, I watched Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing, which I haven't seen in a few years, and there was this nagging familiarity in seeing his portrayal of Benedick - his mannerisms really reminded me of someone, and I couldn't tell who. And then he went into this self-centered rant about love (you know, one of many), and I ( Read more... )

... oh wow, you weren't kidding. He just did the Hand Shaking Gesture, it's like he is channeling. This is a big comfort to me because I was worrisomely close to disliking Branagh in this because I disliked his Hamlet so much. Now I can love the movie with all the crack it deserves!

Re: your sister -- it's definitely a circumstances/person thing, but my dad has known my LJ name for a long time and has managed never to look for it. I feel like if my father, the world's nosiest man, can steer clear, it's possible your sister could have the self-control even if she knew your handle?

I really loved Branagh in this movie, so recognizing McKay in him actually made me appreciate David Hewlett's acting more :-)

And yeah, I know about my sister - she might not care at all - but I feel more comfortable being able to write without anyone I know in RL reading. It's even the small things, as simple as seeing the hours in which I post sometimes - staying up so late on school nights is not an example I want to set.

The same actor who played Todd also was Halling, the tall, gentle guy who was the civilian leader of the Athosians in Teyla's absence. He was sometimes both characters in one episode -- now that's acting!

I forgot that was him too! He must have been familiar from his Halling role, then, because in Into the Woods he's much less... how should I call it? EVIL. He really is a good actor, who doesn't really get to display it in SGA.

I just got back. Glad I went; it was nice seeing her off. We even hugged, which was weird and artificial but seemed appropriate for the last time we'll see one another for the next 6 months; we love one another, but we're not huggy sisters.

Branagh's "Much Ado About Nothing" remains the only original language and setting Shakespeare story I've ever enjoyed. I've tried others but this is the only one that I can understand and enjoy. Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliette is another one I can deal with, but that one has to update the setting.

Of course a lot of it is down to the cast, And what a cast! Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Denzel Washington, Keanu Reeves, Richard Briers, Michael Keaton, Imelda Staunton, Brian Blessed, Ben Elton and Robert Sean Leonard... Damn that's an impressive list of people.

It's a wonderful movie, and while it's not the only one I've enjoyed, it's definitely my favorite. (To be fair, all of the theater productions of Shakespeare I've seen have been in Hebrew - difficult Hebrew, but easier to understand than the English.)

It's a huge and awesome cast - and I'm not surprised you forgot, since she looks really really young and different from today, Kate Beckinsale as Hero the... heroine :-)

Oh my God, I'd never noticed that before.

(I love that play.)
