The Short [SGA] Guide to Hebrew Slang

Jul 01, 2008 04:11

I've been meaning to write a short Hebrew slang dictionary for a while now, and I thought, hey, instead of giving examples like "Michelle thought Joey had an achla car", it would be more interesting to give examples like "Rodney thought John had an achla ass". Except without the slash ( Read more... )

Can I just say that I think it's hysterically funny that Hebrew slang *still* comes from Arabic, even after all these years?

Thanks for this.

You know, I looked at the slang category in the Hebrew Wikipedia, just to get some inspiration for different words, and apparently we borrow slang words from over a dozen languages, not just Arabic and Yiddish and Ladino and English. And then there's the military slang, which is all abbreviations and near impossible to translate. But yeah, I don't think the Arabic words will ever go away - nor do they need to, honestly :-)

I was all set to bookmark this for future use with certain characters and... now I'm never going to get the examples out of my head. So thank you for that. I'll have the words memorized and I won't be able to use them. ;)

Eep! Sorry :-) I could have been more considerate with the gen-oriented population of this journal, who are, in most cases, myself. But, you know, the words are still just the words! And I haven't even made it to the curses, which I don't think I can ever write into examples because that would make for some very twisted NC-17. So, like, those. You'll have those gen, I promise :-)

Oh, it totally wasn't the slash (I read slash! I've written slash!), it was the context. Less scarring and more funny... except for when it was scarring and funny.

You know, this got so long just for these, what, 8 words? I figured I'd just leave it at that for now, and have it kind of... themes. So, Arabic derived words today. Tomorrow: THE WORLD.
