is carving swirls into your hand considered self-multilation even if you're only doing it because they look cool?

While cosmetic scarring is considered beautiful in many cultures, and gaining popularity in ours, I wish you would use some kind of marker, or even henna. Or heck, get it done by a professional.

Because A) you could get an infection and B) I don't like to think of you hurt, bb.

Self-mutilation is a strange term; I'm sure some people consider ear-piercing to fall into that category. But no matter what you call it, please be careful with yourself. You could slip and be hurt.

Exactly this. To be sure not to do any permanent damage, if you are doing it for the pretty, I recommend using gel pens. As someone who writes and draws all over herself frequently, I've found them the smoothest to draw without running on any skin sweat/oil, so they make prettier curves than other pens, plus they come in a variety or colours and sometimes scents. Some even have glitters inside, or glow-in-the-dark ink, which is all kinds of fabulous.
But the most important things are to be careful and take care of yourself.

(Linelenagain, you are very right about everyone having different definition for it; I'm one of the odd people who consider ear-piercing as a form of aesthetic/social self-mutilation. )
