I wish it wasn't Igraine, because I hate the idea of Arthur's mother wasting this precious moment by saddling him with her feelings of betrayal towards her husband. She only had this one moment with her son and she doesn't even talk about him! That scene is written by someone who either isn't a parent, or a shite one.
There was no reason for her to bring it up. It's like she grabbed the first opportunity she got to tell Arthur what had happened. For the first time since he was a baby she sees him, and she brings up her issues with his father instead of focusing on him. It's just something I can't grasp. And to top it all off she says that now she's seen him she would have given her life freely. Puh-lease... Just what Arthur needs.
All she basically tells him is that his father knowingly sacrificed her to get him, but it's all right because she would now sacrifice herself.
Thank you. I love all your capspams. Have you listened to the cast commentary to this episode (which is one of my favourites ever)? Colin and Bradley say that the campfire scene was filmed *once* with cameras on the both of them simultaneously - and it turned out that good. Impressive!
Yes! And it's definitely one of my favorite dvd commentaries too, because of how companionable Bradley and Colin sound throughout and how pleased they were with the campfire scene. I love the idea of the two of them preparing well enough and being so attuned that they could do this in one take. And it works! You can feel it :D
Sorry, the anon post was mine, I forgot I wasn't logged in.
I was curious why you didn't cap the scene where Arthur has re-discovered the evil of magic and Merlin lookes so quietly devastated and yet gives that watery little smile, "Glad he could help"? That's one of my favourite Merlin moments (but admittedly, I'm into angst) and I think it is simply superbly acted. :-)
So pretty. The campfire scene is a thing of beauty. This pic where Merlin has his hands on his thighs, it's this little moment just after he says "probably just my imagination" and fidgets a little bit, it's just perfect. I can't believe they shot the whole scene so quickly.
I really love that little movement too - where Merlin throws the bit of wood he is fiddling with into the fire and then rubs his hands down his thighs (it sounds pornier when written like that than it was in reality!). It's such a natural little movement, and quite unstaged, that I can only think it was a Colin thing rather than a Director thing.
Also love Merlin's little voice-break when he is telling Arthur about Morguase's alleged deception. It hurts him to say all of that to Arthur- good stuff to watch.
All in all though, a good episode. Colin is just lovely all the way through despite being primarily supporting the main plot, and Bradley has some good scenes to (although some are dodgy). I like the plot development as well, and I can only imagine that this will come back to haunt Uther and Arthur in the future.
Also, yes, I keep noticing that they film Arthur to look taller than Merlin despite the obvious difference in real-life. I think Bradley wears heels underneath the shot. :)
...and then rubs his hands down his thighs (it sounds pornier when written like that than it was in reality!).There's a sensuality about it, a gentleness. Merlin always has this way of touching people he cares about in that way, and I like to think he cares about himself too. God, I'm giving these things way too much thought

Somehow, everything he does with his hands end up looking way pornier that it's supposed to. I don't ship Merlin/Hunith, and I know it was supposed to look tender/worried/angry, but damn, his fingers brushing her cheek...

Completely instinctive, which is not something he does really often I think. I mean I have the feeling he is completely aware of everything he does when he acts, while he makes it very natural, but this little bit and most of the campfire scene, it was something else. Or maybe this is because for once Merlin and Arthur share a moment of shy, simple openness. I know that B & C love their A/M bantering, but I would give most of them in exchange for more scenes like this one. And it's one of my favorite scenes with

as far as episodes go I think this was the one that Truly made me a Merlin fangirl. the acting just... blew me away, I was a believer throughout. the best scene is where Arthur goes to confront Uther and the fight. I even had to fangirl about it on my own lj, which doesn't happen often. ^^
I feel much for both Merlin and Arthur in this ep, but surprisingly also for Uther.
ps. Arthur's damp hair in the scene after the fight... oh, yeah, that's what it would look like after a roll in the bed with Merlin too. *lecherous grin*
I love that scene between Arthur and Uther doubly because it's son against his father, but also because young actor vs experienced actor (only not in a competetive way, but in an inspiring way).
Oh, I feel so much for both Merlin and Arthur in this episode! I can't bring myself to feel a lot for Uther though because he lost my respect quite a while ago over several occasions and for every tough moment he has to go through there are several others suffering more than he deos and he's often self to blame, directly or indirectly. So no, no sympathy from me.
