Inquiring mind wants to know (aka poll time)

Jan 05, 2009 20:23

I feel like getting my recs organized, and there are a couple of things I already know I want:

1) I'll keep on making these rec posts the way I have been for quite some time now, I just want to have a place where I can have them archived all together and update that every few months.
2) I've shifted from mainly rps back in my lotrips days, to ( Read more... )

poll, fandom experience

your rec sight was one of the first i had found. it really helped me navigate my way through fandom in the beginning. if you're up to it, i think it's a great contribution to your fandoms. if you're not up to it, a single journal page of rec links is more than sufficient and still totally helpful. :)

I miss my own archive, because I keep misplacing fics, wondering if I'd recced them already etc. I'd love to have fics sorted by category too, and I've tried doing it, but I can't get it done in a way that's satisfying to me (some drabbles fit in like 5 categories, and some fantastic and huge fics don't fit anywhere at all) so I've given up on that. I think... *is still considering*

Looking at this poll I think that what most people are looking for in recs are the same things as I do. I was curious about that.

Oh absolutely! I was wondering if it would be worth the trouble of resurrecting my old rec site, which looked nice and clear, but was a pain to maintain, and it looks like lj options are favorite anyway, so I'll go with that. It would be just a matter of copy/pasting, no html coding involved. Yay!

Also, I like linking to other stuff then just fics, and I was wondering if people are even interested in that.

And in the 3rd question all the points mentioned, except for the size, are things I already include. I was mostly wondering if there are certain things people would like warnings for that I hadn't thought about.

I notice that while finding fandoms that are new to me, but have been around for a while, I love checking out other peoples recs. Especially of people whose taste I know and share from fandoms I've already been involved in. As a matter of fact, it's often the way I find new fandoms.

You should also have a section "Read at your own risk", with a few choice comments of yours...

'choice comments' is an euphemisms for 'snarky remarks', right? I think I'll leave my facepalm 'read at your own risk' recs strictly for friendslocked posts. Don't you feel all privileged right now! ;p

About warnings; in a perfect world I would like to be warned if there are going to be phobia triggers. Mainly that's really too much for me to ask of people, but since you're asking for opinions, that is something I'd wish for.

Anyhow, a rec tag and/or [rec] in the post subject would be plenty enough to mark it if you're keeping it within this journal.

I'm absolutely serious about asking for opinions! I'm always grateful when writers and reccers add warnings. It's not even that I won't read fics with certain warnings, but I know I should pick a certain time and place for specific fics. For instance, I do read non-con occasionally, but I want to know I'll come across it.

I don't think I've recced fics that have that particular phobia trigger, although I'd have to check 'Drastically redefining protocol' by rageprufrock, since part of it takes place in a hospital. The only other fic I recall reccing that could use a specific warning for that is a dom/lij one from the Establishment, but that already had piercing and bloodplay warnings, which are related I guess.

A warning like this will probably not be in the info I put between brackets (you know, rating, pairing and such), but I'll be sure to look out for it and put it in the rec itself.

Cutting and bloodplay will certainly be mentioned, because it's something unusual for me to rec (although I have on at least one occasion).

I think I'll go with rec pages, much in the same way as you have, because a) it's the easiest way of archiving recs and b) I prefer that way from others too.
