The simple answer, I suppose, why there is now Godwin's law equivalent for Communism is that the Nazis have become the popular representation of "evil". Left or right in American politics, they can all agree that they don't like Hitler. I guess it's just a matter of PR rather than body count (although your figures are a tad high)

We have a copy of The Black Book of Communism on the shelf. They are rather low on their estimates for Mao's count (which will never be known with any great accuracy, given the paucity of records).
