when listing characters...if someone only has one name, do we put their nickname before or after it?

an example from The Dresden Files -
a) The Archive "Ivy"
b) "Ivy" The Archive

(or do we say _The "Ivy" Archive"_ ?)

thank you.

query, question, the dresden files

I guess it depends. I don't know anything about Dresden.

If the person's TITLE is "The Archive" then I would say it goes first.

If it's a nickname as you say, I would say it goes second.

I might not make any sense. It's late. I'm sleepy. LOL.

it's her title...its what she's been called, what her mom was called - every woman in her family line, back to the first written word. none of them had names - they were "The Archive" and nothing else.
"Ivy" is the nickname given to her by Harry Dresden (portrayed in the series by Paul Blackthorne).

sleep well.

Then I would definitely say The Archive "Ivy."

Thanks for explaining since I wasn't in the know. hehe.

What's the context for the list? Listing characters that are in a story (in the header of the fic), or something else?

In general, I'd probably use parentheses or "aka":

a) Ivy (The Archive)
b) The Archive, aka Ivy (or aka "Ivy")

If it's for the header of a fic, and she's referred to primarily as one or the other (Ivy or The Archive) within the story, I'd just put that and leave off the other name; anyone who doesn't know they're one and the same should be able to figure it out from context.

I'd probably change tactics and user either parentheses or a slash, since it's not a standard name- The Archive (Ivy) or Ivy/The Archive. But that's me.

Oh, and she's absolutely one of my favorite characters in the Dresden Files books....
