I guess I always approach it from one of two angles. Either I start with some idea about the show "What if Jenny and Sarah were all dressed up as Pirates!" and then work out the AU that would make that possible or I start with the idea "What if Jane Seymour had lived?" and then pick a fandom where there seems to be a good story for that premise..

I don't think I've ever started with both the fandom AND the divergence point and then tried to work out how to fit them together...
