I like both of those, but I think sometimes it depends on what type of divergence it is and how far back it occurred. And it also probably depends on the tone/style of the story you're telling!

I also prefer both sorts of story.
Most stories I've read were written in the first or the second way.
I would be really interested to see a combination.
Perhaps with some dream flashbacks and the view of several generations on the events.

I think it entirely depends on the characters and what the au/apoc concept is.
