Case closed, they’d agreed to split a small meal - a bite to eat, really - at a nearby little restaurant. As they walked to it, Agent Chen helped Agent Granger with a few words.
Close to the door now, and, “Fried wontons sound good?”
“Just fine. And relax,” Alice said.
“You sure I’m pronouncing it right?” Colby asked.
“One hundred percent,” she assured him.
“Okay,” and they walked into the mom-and-pop Chinese restaurant. At the counter, Colby said, “Ni hao,” to the girl behind the counter.
“Hello yourself,” she said, eyeing Colby’s muscles.
He glanced over at Alice, whose smile was threatening to erupt into a laugh. He couldn’t help but smile back. “Nice,” Colby said.
“De nada,” Alice said, switching to Spanish.

They weren’t dates, Colby insisted. Of course, that just earned him eye-rolls and sad shakes of the head from David and the girls back at the bullpen.
Tonight it was Colby’s turn to tell about something that’d happened to him. Alice was looking fairly skeptical about what he’d related. “That’s what he said?” she asked.
Colby nodded. “Pretty bad?” having no idea what the criminal in question had called him those years ago.
“If you’re Chinese,” Alice said. “Why would he say it to you?”
“I think he was out of insults in the other three languages he knew.”
“Ah,” she said. “Well regardless, I think you’re just right, as you are.”
“Well thank you,” Colby said. “And the same to you,” and was fairly sure that that was a faint blush on her cheeks.

“I have to admit,” Alice said as they walked to her car, “I didn’t think we’d emerge from that dinner as unscathed as we are.”
“I had some advice,” Colby admitted, “on how to talk to parents.”
Ah. “Amita?”
“Close. Charlie…same reason.”
“Good as the advice clearly was, Colby, Charlie had the caste system at bat for him - you had only your own eloquence.”
“And the fact you think I’m adorable.”
“Cute,” Alice playfully corrected him as he held the door open for her to slide into the car. “But yes.”
Once Colby was inside and buckling up, Alice said to him, “Let’s go home.”
“No argument there,” Colby said, and asked her, how are you?: “Ni hao ma?”
Alice’s answer was unequivocal: “Anticipatory.”
