with exceptions like The reluctant Mr Darwin, most of Quammen's books are anthologies on varied topics - so they're good.

Bastard Tongues, I've been informed, was written by the world expert in creoles and pidgin languages - so whether you want Colby and Callie speaking a creole (Hawaiian, perhaps?) or you're just curious, that's good too.

the others are all good too, but the ones I just mentioned are a nice place to start.
