things I've learned from being a waitress

- when you're going out to eat, don't scrimp and penny pinch by not ordering a soda, or by not substituting for fries...you'll be happier cuz you'll be eating what you really want, that $2 isn't going to affect you life, and your server will be 35 cents of a tip happier ( Read more... )

there are a lot of reasons to eat leftovers from a restaurant, a primary one being that, even among non-students, most people can't afford to eat out often, and when they do eat out at a nice restaurant, they might like to enjoy the food later which they couldn't consume at dinner. It may be a pain in the ass for the waiter, which is a shame, and it should warrant better tipping, but it's certainly not gross for the people taking the food with them --- if it was, they wouldn't take it. I would absolutely rather eat leftovers from a restaurant than most things on our meal plan!

- Tip at least 15 percent. We work hard. If we did a good job, seriously, crank it up to 20 percent.

- Don't make a mess. Please.

- Know what you're ordering. Don't send it back 20 times. (Oh, your calamaris has breading? Can you sautee it instead? Wait, what was this sauteed in?)

- If you're allergic to onions and peppers, don't come to an Italian restaurant. (Swear to you, I dealt this one.) Corollaries include not going to a seafood joint if you're allergice to fish; no vegans in steakhouses; etc.
