Okay, well, he wasn't dead. Chuck hadn't exactly been expecting that. He also hadn't expected for the family to magically start talking to him again out of pity. The papers were even making him seem like more of a victim than a jerk who got what was coming, which was another surprise. If it hadn't been for the weird hospital smell, the fact that ( Read more... )

Castiel had absolutely no concept of email, but he did know from prayer, and when Chuck had been lying in the alley, he had most definitely prayed.

Castiel rather felt he couldn't be blamed for having taken so long to get around to answering the prayer. He was busy. Raphael was plotting something and Balthazar kept trying to talk him into having orgies. It absolutely wasn't his fault, and anyway, he was here now, and clearly things had gone alright.

"Chuck," he said, appearing in the hospital room. "Why are you injured?"

"But sometimes the people you meet there have guns," Castiel pointed out. He might be just a little overly worried about Chuck getting himself hurt again.

"That's a risk I run anywhere in this city," Chuck said, shaking his head. "The odds of me getting shot twice are extremely low. I'm not like Dean and run head first into stupid life-threatening situations."

"Apparently," said Castiel, "you prefer to stumble drunkenly upon them."

Well you got him there, Castiel. "Okay, fine. I will avoid going into alleys while intoxicated. Is that better?"

"Yes. I suspect it'll be quite an improvement." Castiel had missed these little talks. Spending time with Balthazar just wasn't the same.

Chuck huffed out a little laugh. He had missed this as well. "I'm surprised you were able to make it here what with a war going on and everything."

"It's a rare quieter moment," Castiel said. "And Sam and Dean have yet to try and call me for assistance, today."

"Man, they really can't do anything themselves, can they?" Chuck asked with a smirk.

"They do appear to be finding it difficult. It was much quieter when Dean thought Sam was dead."

"Wait, what?" Chuck asked. "How in the hell did that happen?"

"Sam jumped into Lucifer's cage to avert the apocalypse," Castiel explained. "He didn't stay there, long. Well, his body didn't."

Because this was totally the stuff of casual conversation, here, Cas.

"Sam's an idiot." Chuck wasn't really surprised by that course of action, but he felt that it needed to be said. "So, what, did he come back as a zombie or something? I don't think I can deal with a zombie Sam in the future."

"Oh, no, not at all," Castiel reassured him. "He's merely without a soul."

"And that's different from being a zombie how?" A lot of people told Chuck he didn't have a soul, but he was surprised to hear that could actually happen.

"His body is full functional. And he's exhibited no taste for human flesh."
