I really like this show, it makes me laugh every time. I agree, Sheldon is what makes it work.

The 2nd season is where to start. The other thing they did in 2nd season is make Penny a proper character with her own motivation and jokes instead of just being a piece of scenery for the others to say their lines at.

I found it funny from the start but I agree with Nat - Penny started off like a cardboard cutout.
