Summary: Lotus has been on her own since she was sixteen, raising a girl she rescued from crack head parents. Now living in West Chester, PA with her best friend, Venge, they find themselves in the company of some people they never thought they'd be interested in being close to.
I put the last of her things in the trunk of my car, looking up at the porch of the house where she stood. "Come on, Vyra." I told her, closing the trunk of the car and walking over to her, taking her hand gently and pulling her towards the car.
"I don't wanna leave, Kay." She told me, looking back at the house.
I sighed, trying desparately not to cry. "Vy, if you don't come with me, you'll be taken from your parents and put with someone you don't like." I said, trying to make her understand that she'd be better off leaving.
She nodded and got into the passenger seat of my shitty little Honda Civic, wiping the tears off her cheeks.
I walked over to the driver's seat and got in, pulling away from the shithole crack house the eleven year-old had been living in. "Vy, this is for the best. Trust me. We'll have our new life in Pennsylvania." I leaned over and hugged the girl that was four years my junior.
"Why Pennyslvania, Kay?" She asked.
I shrugged, reaching over to turn on the radio as I pulled onto the interstate and accelerated. "I just have this feeling that it's where we should be. We'll enroll in school and make a new life for ourselves, and then we can put all this shit behind us." I told her, brushing a strand of my brown hair from my eyes.
She nodded and smiled, pulling a cigarette from the pack of Marlboro's I had stashed in the center console.
I grabbed it from her and put it between my lips, flicking my lighter and taking a long drag. "You shouldn't smoke, you're eleven." I told her, rolling down the window to let the smoke escape.
"Yeah, well, you're sixteen. You shouldn't be smoking either." She said, taking my lighter and lighting her own. "Hey, Kay..." She said after a couple minutes of listening to the song on the radio.
"Yeah, Vy?" I asked, flicking the butt of the cig out onto the road and rolling up the window.
"Thanks... I won't bug you ever, I promise." She told me, smiling over at me.
"I'm holding you to that." I said with a laugh, leaning over to hug her again.
"VYRA ROSE DAUGHTRY!!!" I screamed up the stairs to the townhouse I, my adopted daughter, and my best friend, Venge, lived in in West Chester, Pennsylvania. "GET YOUR HAPPY ASS DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW OR I'M MAKING YOU WALK TO SCHOOL!"
She screamed something inaudible, which was followed by a door being flung open, another scream, and the sound of three feet on the stairs leading to where I was.
"Here, Lotus." Venge said angrily, dropping my adopted daughter/friend at my feet. "Next time, I will beat her senseless." She said, returning upstairs to finish getting ready for work.
"She's a bitch." Vyra said, rubbing her scalp where Venge had pulled her hair to get her out of bed.
"Yeah, but she got you up. Now go get dressed, unless you wanna go to school in your Tinkerbell pjs." I said, going into the kitchen to cook breakfast for everybody.
"Yes, mom." She grumbled, going back up the stairs.
--- Later; Rex's ---
"I don't see why you still deal with her, Lotus." Venge told me from the other side of the bar.
"I've dealt with her since she was eleven, Venge, I'm not gonna put her on the street now. Plus, I adopted her last year. She's legally my child." I said, finishing off the glass of orange juice I had. "And I have to go to Xtreme, I'll be back later to grab you for Kildare's."
"Alright, lates, Lotus." She said, throwing the towel she had been cleaning the bar with at me.
I laughed and walked out to my pride and joy: My purple Camero.
--- 2:30pm; Xtreme Ink --
"Xtreme Ink." I said into the phone receiver.
"Can I speak to Lotus Daughtry?" A somber male voice drifted into my ear.
"This is she, may I ask who's speaking?" I asked, knowing that Rich and the guys wouldn't care about my personal phone call, I brought them in enough business.
"This is Miles Turner, your landlord." He said, very business-like.
"Oh, hello, Mr. Turner." I told him, pleasantly. "What can I help you with?"
"Ms. Daughtry, you are aware of the agreement you signed when you moved into my townhome, correct?"
"Which agreement, sir?"
"The strict no pets policy that you've been repetitively warned of, Ms. Daughtry." He explained, harshly.
"Yes, sir, what about it?" I questioned, waving goodbye to the two guys that had been in the shop getting tats.
"You've been warned numerous times about the dog and cat you have living in the building... I'm sorry, Ms. Daughtry, but if you don't get rid of those animals you will be evicted." He told me.
My jaw dropped, "I'm sorry, Mr. Turner, but I refuse to get rid of my pets just to stay in your junky townhome. We'll be moved out as soon as possible." I told him, resisting the urge to slam the phone down on him.
"You have until the end of the week." He said, almost happily.
My eyes filled with tears, "A week?! I can't possibly find a place that soon!" I screamed, having the guys turn to look at me.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Daughtry. You have until the end of the week." He said, hanging up.
"What's wrong, Lotus?" Rob asked, walking up to the receptionist desk I was sitting at.
"I'm getting kicked out of my place, Rob." I said, looking up at him.
"I told you, girl, when you moved in that he'd try to fuck you over." He said, hugging me.
I nodded, "I know, Rob. I just needed a place so the adoption agency would let me officially adopt Vy." I told him, hugging him back.
"I know, Lo... Why don't you come stay with me for a while?" He asked.
"No, I couldn't do that. I'll find somewhere. I'll talk to Venge about it. No worries." I said, smiling.
"Alright, now get the fuck outta here. We don't need your ass anymore." He said, smiling.
I laughed and grabbed my shit, clocking out and walking out to my car to go retrieve my best friend from work.
As soon as I got into my car my cell rang. "Hello?" I asked.
"Lotus Daughtry?" The person on the other line asked.
"May I ask who's calling?" I asked, getting a slight sense of Deja Vu.
"This is Principal Snyder with Henderson High. We're calling in regards of your daughter, Vyra Daughtry." The formal voice said.
"Yes, what about her?" I asked pulling out of the parking lot.
"Well... Ms. Daughtry, Vyra got into a fight today, and she's been suspended, effective immediately. We need you to come pick her up from the office." He announced.
I groaned inwardly and gathered myself. "Of course, I'll be there in a few minutes." I said, hanging up the phone and turning the opposite direction I was heading to go pick up my child from school.
--- The Car Heading to Kildare's ---
"I can't believe you got suspended, Vyra! How could you be so irresponsible?!" I shouted, gripping the steering wheel tightly.
"The bitch asked for it." She said, looking at her busted lip in the mirror on the sun visor.
"I don't care if she asked for it. You started the fight. You got suspended. You should have been the bigger person and walked away." I told her, thanking God that Venge had brought her car to Rex's in case of emergency.
"Well, I wasn't, mom! Okay! I fucked up!" She screamed back crossing her arms over her chest.
I sighed and reached over to pull her into a hug, "Vy, you know I love you, I'm just pissed. We got evicted from our house today." I told her, kissing her forehead before straightening in my seat.
She narrowed her eyes, confused, "Why?" She asked, stealing one of my cigs and lighting it.
"Because Venge and I refuse to get rid of Haggard and Zero. And Turner is a dick." I explained, taking the cancer stick from her lips and taking a drag.
"Hey!" She whined, pouting.
"I just bought you a pack yesterday, smoke your own." I told her, pulling up into the parking lot for Kildare's. "Now grab your shit and go straight to the back. I'm not getting fired for you trying to score free booze again. We can't afford it right now." I said, giving her one more hug before going into the bar.
"Hey, Lotus, got everything straightened out?" Venge asked from the bar, a familiar face smiling at me from across the bar from her.
"Yeah, we're all good. Hey, Ry!" I said, hugging a regular customer.
"Hey, Lotus. What's up with the minor?" He asked, watching Vy walk through the door of the employee's only area.
"That's my kid. She got suspended earlier, and we had to have a talk and stuff." I said, walking around the bar to drop my stuff off and tie a waitress apron around my waist.
"You have a kid? She looks like fourteen. Aren't you nineteen?" He asked, taking a swig of his beer.
"Yeah, she is, and yeah, I am. I adopted her. I've raised her since she was eleven. Her parents were crack addicts, and I saved her from that." I told him, giving another regular a hug and told him that I'd be with him in a sec. "You're not here alone, are you?" I asked.
He shook his head, "Nah. The gang's coming soon and Raab's pissin'." He explained.
"Oh, alright. Well, I've gotta get to work, I'll talk to ya later, kay?" I asked, disappearing before he could answer, not that he cared.
--- Two Hours Later; Kildare's ---
"Who are they?" I asked Dunn, leaning against the bar after I had served everybody in my section.
"That's the happy couple." He said, earning confused looks from both Venge and I. "That's Bam and Missy." He explained further.
"Oh... They don't look too happy." I commented, taking a sip of my green tea.
"I think we should let them fight." Venge spoke up, leaning on the bar to watch the scene.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head, walking over to the feuding couple. "Can I help you two?" I asked politely.
Missy turned her head to glare at me, "No. We're fine." She said, looking over my outfit of a plain black t-shirt and jeans.
"Two bottles of Heineken." Bam spoke up, giving me a look of gratitude.
"Bam, no! This is the whole reason I didn't want us coming out. You always end up smashed and we have to go have dinner with my family tomorrow and I don't need you hungover." She scolded.
"I'll be right back with those drinks, sir." I said, jotting down the order on my notepad even though I didn't need it.
"No you won't." Missy said, making me give her a 'I-Know-You're-Not-Talking-To-Me' look. "He's not drinking." She added.
"Excuse me, Miss, but once I write down an order on my notepad-" I said, showing her the order. "I have to put it through. So somebody is getting these drinks, so either you two can get it or I can have you arrested for giving alcohol to a minor. That minor being me because I would have to pay for these. What's your choice?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
Her glare intensified but she said nothing to me. Instead, she turned to Bam, "Fine! Get drunk, Bam, I don't care. But don't expect me to be waiting up for you when you pour yourself into bed at four am... And you are coming with me to brunch with mom and dad." She told him, grabbing her purse and walking out the door, bumping into me on the way.
"Thanks." He muttered, looking down slightly embarrassed.
"It's okay, sugar. Look, why don't you come sit at the bar with Dunn and Raab." I suggested.
He smirked and nodded, walking up to the bar, taking the seat between his two friends. "How do you dickheads know this bitch?" He asked, pointing to me.
"She's been working here for the past three years with her friend, Venge, the bartender. They're the most kickass chicks that ever lived." Dunn said for the both of them.
"It's only because we give you guys alcohol." Venge told him, setting another shot of Jack in front of Raab and one of the beers in front of Bam.
"Well, yeah... but you'd still be kickass if you didn't." He told her, finishing off his beer and ordering a new one.
--- Two More Hours Later; Kildare's ---
"No!" I screamed, losing yet another game of the shitty Texas Hold 'Em we had going on with the three guys, Venge, and me.
"Alright, Lotus, take it off." Raab said, waiting for me to peel off my, already wet shirt from the wet t-shirt contest they had us get into.
I sighed and complied, pulling it over my head and tossing it onto the bar next to my jeans and shoes. "You're lucky nobody's here or I'd get fired for this." I said, shivering a little from the cool air hitting me.
"Lotus, put your clothes back on, nobody wants to see you lose anymore." Venge saved, picking up the cards and stowing them back under the bar.
I thanked her silently and pulled my clothes back on, seeing Dunn and Raab frown with disappointment. "It's too bad the millionaire here is the married one, or else he could've gotten me down to nothing." I joked, walking around the bar to bus the few tables left over from earlier.
"Yeah, too bad." I heard him say, the alcohol he had consumed slurring his words.
I shook my head and put some plates into a gray plastic bin held by one of the bus boys. "Venge!" I called, sitting at the bar across from her. "Now that we have a few minutes... What are we gonna do about our living situation? There aren't any places for rent that allow pets that we can get for cheap." I said, resting my chin in my hands.
She sighed, "I don't know, Lotus. We'll just have to look tomorrow. We have our day off, we can go look in the morning." She said, not stressing about the whole situation.
I sighed as well, "Yeah, I guess we can... I'm gonna go check on Vy." I told her, walking back into the employee lounge to see Vyra asleep on the couch.
I smiled and knelt down by her, gently shaking her awake. "Vy, sweets, you need to get up and start getting your stuff. We're closing soon." I told her.
She sat up, stretched, rubbed her eyes, and yawned. "M'kay, mom." She said, leaning back on the couch and going to sleep.
I shook my head and walked back out seeing Venge talking with the guys, beckoning me over once she noticed me. "What's up? I'm not playing poker again." I stated, jokingly.
"No, Bam has offered to let us move in with him until we can save up enough money to get us a place." She told me.
"No. I couldn't intrude like that. Venge, you can stay, but I'm not gonna make him have to deal with you, me, and Vy." I told her.
"Venge filled me in on your kid thing. Don't worry. I got enough room for all of ya." He told me, having sobered up a great deal.
"What about your wife?"
"She's not gonna say shit. It's my house, my life, my rules." He said.
"Well... Alright then... We'll stay at our house tonight and start bringing our stuff in the morning." I told him.
"No you won't. You're gonna pack your shit and stay tonight and I'll get these dipshits to move you tomorrow." He told us.
I looked at Venge who smiled and shrugged. "Okay. We'll go grab some clothes and be over there in a few minutes."
"Sweet." He smiled and helped Dunn carry Raab out the front door to his car.
"We have a place to stay, Venge." I said happily, grabbing my tips and my bag before going to retrieve Vy from the back.
