Summary: Jo was aware that a sudden desire to avoid moral ambiguity might be the stupidest reason ever to call a demon, but she didn’t let that stop her.

Reccer's notes: One of my favourite things is when authors take two characters who have no reason to gel together or to be together at all, and makes it work. In this story Ruby is exactly as confusing to Jo, as she is undecipherable in canon, and Jo's warmth and brightness and urge to hunt come through especially well in contrast. There's a quiet and rather surprising frisson to their interaction and a sensuality between them that fits the story very well. It slides into canon at the same time as it feels like a divergence from it for Ruby, an unexpected glimpse into another side of her. Well worth a read.

[Short excerpt]Jo’s back lit up with pain with every breath. “It’s not too bad. Bruised a couple of ribs, maybe.”
Ruby winced sympathetically. “Want me to pick up some painkillers for you?”Jo choked back a laugh - and fuck, that hurt. Sure, she’d send the helpful demon out to pick her up some prescription meds. Would Ruby steal them from a hospital pharmacy, Jo wondered, or murder a dealer for his stash?
