He doesn't feel like he belongs, but sees no way out - until the arrival of a new member shakes things up in the paramilitary group. Jared doesn't know whether he should be intrigued or afraid of Jensen Ackles, but when he gets caught in the power play around him coming to a head, he's left with little choice in the matter.
Reccer's notes: Written for the 2012 edition of spn_j2_bigbang, I had this story on my doubt-list for a long time because of the subject matter, but it is handled beautifully. The story is told from 17 year old Jared's point of view and does not get overly political. He didn't choose to be in this environment and thus the fic mostly deals with why he feels uncomfortable. We get a solid backstory about how he ended up living in the camp with his father before the fic focuses on Jared dealing with his conflicting feelings for Jensen. I really love how their relationship evolves in these intimidating surroundings. The ending was as satifyingly realistic as the whole build up. Extra points for giving Jeffrey Dean Morgan a sympathetic role.

Still he tried to fit in, tried to be a good son, a good little soldier…
It all came crashing down one year later, when the last turning point was reached. Jared had been insecure about himself for a while, had been wondering and thinking since he had entered puberty. He knew that he felt something that he shouldn’t feel, and he knew that he would get in trouble if his dad ever found out. He had tried to change, tried to look at girls and feel the way he sometimes did when watching guys but had failed fundamentally. He had come to terms with it slowly and unwillingly, and sometimes he wondered if he wasn’t misjudging things, if he was giving people less credit than they deserved… then his dad found a drawing that he thought inappropriate, gay....
