For how often I check Pitchfork (almost daily) and the average depth of music criticism in the magazines I read most often (shallow), I'd think that Pitchfork's habit of writing thousandsomething-word record reviews would be one of my favorite things about the site. I wish that more people would realize that Blake and Jenny wrote their best songs together. It's not like there are Blake Songs and Jenny Songs on all the Rilo Kiley albums. Jenny wasn't the genius of the band (unless the genius of the band was in the dresses she wore). They wrote the songs pretty much together, at least in the beginning.

Since Rilo Kiley broke up, neither of them have been able to put out something as good as the best Rilo Kiley songs. I think Jenny tends to absorb the style of whoever she's writing with. (Which is a bad thing in the case of Jonathan Rice--if Blake is supposedly bad, what is he?) Blake has more of his own sensibility, but that last Elected record was nowhere near as good as the first.

That said: Blake is underrated, "Ripchord" is the bomb. I'm not embarrassed to listen to Rilo Kiley now, but I was also probably past the Era of Feeling Things Deeply when I first started listening to them, too. If I had to reach for an RK album to listen to, it would probably be More Adventurous, which I like ( ... )

Thank you Pitchfork for reminding me to check my LJ account. I always especially loved the Blake songs. Not sure why really, but I <3 them most. I also totally agree with Marisa on it seeming like she absorbs the style of whoever she's writing with (or dating?)
