Gap week

Time was, I'd spent most of my days in between jobs probably just sleeping and seeing movies. But I haven't had days between jobs in a very long time, so when I took a week before stopping previous job and starting brand-new job (that happens tomorrow), my ideas involved rereading a bunch of Batman comics, watching movies and/or old episodes of ( Read more... )

the Phoenix fine print points out that they restricted themselves to songs released as singles
I downright hate Oasis compared to how much too many of my friends like you have irrationally loved Oasis for decades. Not sure why people even compare Blur to Oasis when history has clearly made the correct choice.

That being said, saying only singles count in the decade the single arguably mattered the least is not only arbitrary, but a big f-you to Oasis, maybe the best B-sides band ever. They would constantly take what they considered their best songs and relegate them to b-sides. I think the fact that OASIS did this makes the singles only policy flawed.

Also, I own that Gay Dad record.

It's true (although I lost track of Oasis B-sides post-nineties and sometimes wondered if they were continuing to stick great songs on B-sides, perhaps accounting for the increasing hit-and-miss nature of their records? Probably not, though) -- and the Phoenix also indulged in some convenience by including "Acquiesce," which I'm pretty sure was only a single in the U.S., where it was the "single" off of the Masterplan B-sides collection. Also, it is downright strange to champion singles as a measurement but slag off "Wonderwall" and "Song 2" by some weird principle (I guess that they were bigger in America?).

I kind of miss B-sides, which I guess are now more like bonus tracks in various other countries. Maybe I just don't seek them out as much but I can't name many other bands that have extra songs I enjoyed as much as those by Oasis and TMBG. I guess the Hold Steady has some pretty great ones.
