Or how the weather used to be

Another weeknight, another meaty rock show at Webster Hall that has me going to bed at 1AM. This time it was the Weakerthans. I'm not as familiar with them as I am with the New Pornographers. They put on a simple but energetic show. They look like five guys you could see on the subway (any subway, too, not just the L) but when they're all (save the drummer) armed with guitars and jumping around, it's good stuff.

Marisa memorized the whole damn setlist. If it was me doing the setlist alone, it would be like, "they played that song and that other song that sounds like that song, plus both the cat ones." Instead:

Psalm for the Elks Lodge Last Call
Civil Twilight
Our Retired Explorer (Dines with Michel Foucault in Paris, 1961)
Benediction
Reconstruction Site
Aside
Night Windows
Relative Surplus Value
Sun in an Empty Room
Left and Leaving
Tournament of Hearts
The Reasons
Time's Arrow
History to the Defeated
Plea from a Cat Named Virtue
---
Sounds Familiar
One Great City!
Pamphleteer
Confessions of a Futon Revolutionist
Happy Birthday to Michael
Virtue the Cat Explains Her Departure
(Manifest)
---
My Favorite Chords
Hymn of the Medical Oddity
Watermark

I am not a big fan of the extra-large encore and the medium-sized second encore. It just feels off-balance; it was like the show was about to end for forty minutes which in turn feels like milking it. But the songs were good. They basically played every song of theirs that I really know. All of the ones I remember from Reconstruction Site, everything from the new CD Reunion Tour that I remember liking (except maybe the title track, which I don't really remember; I only remember liking it), everything Marisa's ever put on a mix tape for me. And they played both cat songs. And there was someone there dressed as (I assume) Virtue the Cat. By the way, Happy Halloween.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to rest up. For work tomorrow, and for Hold Steady/Art Brut in three weeks.
