Over a week in the making!

Do you read music magazines? Do you notice how much they suck? Do you notice how even the better ones insist on composing all-inclusive "best of the year" lists that inevitably (a.) find a way to mention at least two-dozen albums (b.) still miss at least one major great one? In other words, they fail on every level. You might think to yourself ( Read more... )

the hold steady, they might be giants, weezer, ben folds, okgo, mountain goats, sleater-kinney, album round-ups, oasis, the new pornographers

Would you LEAVE that Ben Fold album ALONE? I swear, it's good.

I'm totally up to Pearl Jam in my cd-listening project (why is Vitology the only one I own?), which means OK Go was last week. I came to the conclusion that I could live without "It's a Disaster," and I like "Crash the Party" much better. I think it's the lyrics in the verses that do "It's a Disaster" in. ("Happy trails/happy trails/happy trails/happy trails" vs. "While the rest of the girls/all sigh for the night he/was smiling politely.") But I came around on "Invicible," and I really like it now.

I like the Magic Numbers song they play on The Peak.

The chorus to "Crash the Party" is as stupid as the chorus to "It's a Disaster" is great.

I like choruses that tell people to burn holes in the carpets.

Rockin' The Suburbs is still one of the best albums ever.

The fact that Chuck Klosterman doesn't care that much for this record is reason enough to call it great.

Noooooo! Did you read his article about female cover bands like Lez Zeppelin? That ruled.

Kelly Clarkson's whole album is surprisingly good -- not just "Since U Been Gone."

It was OK for one of his, but his psuedo-philosophical-yet-psuedo-tossed-off musings still make me want to throw up. He simultaneously wants you to think that he's incredibly bright and not trying very hard. I don't think either is true.

I heard a bunch of it in Mar's sister's car... I'm sure it's the best American Idol album ever but I didn't find any of it very memorable.

Yeah, well, he's obviously trying hard.

At first, a lot of the K.C. songs sound the same, but the album has really grown on me. I think she's quite talented.

I was thinking about doing a list like this, but then I realized it would be pretty much the same as yours with fewer entries.

To even look at this list, I have to try to comprehend your penchant for suburban semi-rock (Ben Folds, Weezer, TMBG, etc., etc., blech), and then, failing that, I just have to content myself with the few things you got right: Mountain Goats (not #1, but top-5) and the Hold Steady, which each have more to say about being young than creepy late-30-somethings Ben Folds and Rivers Cuomo, who serenade the barely 18 crowd. Creepy ( ... )

Hey, as stated, this is a critique of *every album* I bought this year, not a genuine top 20. If I knew enough music to make a real top ten, I'd guess 4-6 of these would make it. The Beck and Ben Folds and Weezer records are disappointments; I bought them because of their previous, better albums ( ... )
