Hi, all. I'm not quite sure of the protocol for posting fanfics; if they're frowned on here, I apologize in advance.
Even if you don't read the fic, however, this is a question that I'd really like to hear some input and discussion on, if you're up to it.
I've been writing a fanfic that tries to deal with the odd way the Rockman.EXE universe treats

GAH. SO MANY QUESTIONS.
Sorry. You've just given me a bunch of food for thought, but here's one last question. If, say, Roll were deleted, should Rock grieve? Or should he ask Meiru to back her up from previous data? Does the fact that a Navi's death can be "overcome" make their life worth less?

I also spotted in the manga that yes, Netto calls Rockman "just a program" when he's upset, but there's also a bit right in the first volume. Gutsman get's deleted and Netto thinks "Be cool Dex, Gutsman can be regenerated from backup." (English manga - so used Dex). This seems to be a far cry from how he acts when Rockman is threatened with deletion.
The relationship an operator has with their navi seems to heavily hinge on whether or not the navi is a custom built one or not and then on the personality of the operator - how they treat their own navi.
You've actually got me thinking about comparing this to a concept in a sci-fi series I've read which seems on some level comparable - when something looks human and can speak and think can it be human if it's a program?
You've put forward a good question~
So much to think about

I haven't read the manga recently, and I'm not sure if I've ever seen the first book. But yeah, there is a strange disconnect between how Netto treats Rockman - and his first generic Navi in the anime - like a program, and then how he treats Rockman later, even without the Saito backstory. While I know that his later view of Rockman as a friend and partner is the recommended view, does that mean that another Operator viewing their Navi as less-than-human is actually wrong? Would Netto have the right to get angry at someone who suggests that Rockman is just a program, and that his deletion doesn't matter since he could just be backed up ( ... )

Yeah, there's a question I can't seem to get cleared up in my mind about deletion. If death, or anything, is reversible, does life necessarily become cheap as a result? If you could have a backup of your best friend to go back to whenever he did something you didn't like, is that a true friendship? And does it matter if you choose to never use that backup option?
The pet analogy is...well, a little disturbing to me, since I prefer to think of custom Navis as, if not human, than equally conscious and self-aware as a human. In that view, frivolously modifying, or treating the Navi as a pet, would be wrong in the same way that forcing a human - or even a self-aware alien species! - into the role of a pet is wrong. Consciousness should count for something.

The manga actually acknowledged that Rockman was Saito? When did this happen?
Or was this one of those random comments that Miyuki just kinda...leaves out there?
