Honestly, I'd just stick to basic stuff, or you will be trying to do too much on your own. Basic writing tips, beta readers, a crash course on Mary Sues, and a good way to get in touch with other fanficcers (such as Lj's comms and messages boards).
I know that "Don't Do's" are always popular! Like Flagellantket said, basic stuff is just fine.
What makes a successful fiction? I think a really good example of a successful fiction is "This Army Life," an FFVII one. It's sorta OOC and is totally crazy and almost irrelevant to the FFVII plotline but people love it!
