Guardians of the Galaxy

Went to see Guardians of the Galaxy yesterday - anniversary trip for me and James, who is always trying to get me to watch superhero movies ;) Unexpectedly, this one turned out to be brilliant!

Ooh! Silly, over-the-top, but with a simple, strong plot was what I hoped for, but wasn't sure if they'd be able to pull it off.

I know a few other comic characters but never heard of these ones, but I'm broadly in favour of making films out of the interesting bits and trusting the film to get the general idea across, rather than sticking to the most famous characters. Several people have said they need many fewer origin stories -- most superheroes are designed for people to get the idea in one line.

This is the thing, I thought it might be too silly and over-the-top but actually they got it just right - lots of action, some really witty stuff in the script and all well acted. And yes, strong plot too.

I think James Gunn is a really talented (and stylish) director. Without someone keeping a firm grip on the helm, it could have been much less of a success, but he pulled it off really well.
