The Hobbit - film review

Jan 31, 2013 17:38

I've seen The Hobbit (by which I mean part 1, An Unexpected Journey) twice now, so time for a review.

Cut for spoilers - also watch out for spoilers for the rest of the book, especially in comments )

Apparently there will be an extended edition released in the autumn that'll have 20-25 minutes of extra footage, so no doubt those scenes that appeared in the trailers will be back. Hooray!

Cumberbum is playing the Necromancer and Smaug - movement and voice for both.

I remember thinking "Where was the shards of Narsil clip? And the clip of Bilbo and Elrond stading on a balcony chatting?" - extended edition ftw!

What did you think of Radagast?

Ahhh, now I seem to remember a rumour that he was playing two characters...

I thought Radagast was really sweet, and I love his bunny chariot, but I was slightly icked out by his hair...

I think they've done pretty well with CGI animals though, which bodes well for some of what happens in films 2-3.

I'm sort of glad I never tried the 3D version, I think.

Ha, my tiny TV will tame those action sequences! Really need a bigger TV :/

I think this is reasonable pandering to your children if it leaves you with a big TV :) But yes, you'll have to send them to bed early or something :)

I thought the 3D was better done than older 3D in that someone took the focus puller quietly out back and shot him in the head about halfway through the film in that it felt a lot more organic. And my, haven't special effects come on since the LOTR movies. But seeing it in 3D, it felt like the frame rate was a bit low in places, like a PC struggling to render a complicated scene. Maybe it's just because I tend to look for that stuff.

I've been rewatching LOTR, and while I still think their CGI is pretty good for its time, it's quite amazing to see the difference in quality watching the Hobbit - it's especially noticeable in scenes featuring wargs or Gollum. Gollum's skin in the Hobbit looks a lot more realistic in the extreme close-ups.
