Another shortish post, because I'm up to my eyeballs in indexing. (Warning: this post contains repeated uses of words like 'amazing', 'cool' and 'awesome'. Basically, this is me in Indiana Jones mood.)

I really found it fascinating once I first heard about it. I remember watching something on the History Channel where they had present-day sculptors make statues to the same standards using the tools of the period. It was really amazing. There's also a book (part of a series I've been reading) called "The Emperor's Tomb" which revolves around it (obviously). The books are along the lines of Dan Brown with following legendary items/objests etc. but I like them better.
