I saw Rob Roy around the time it was first released, but I never made the comparison with Braveheart, because they deal with very different themes (and different times in history).

I think Rob Roy is a pretty good film, but it plays just as fast and loose with history as Braveheart does. For example, even though the movie's timeline overlaps with the Jacobite risings, they're hardly even present in the movies.

I think both movies really suffer from being made primarily for consumption by North American audiences, so the Scots are all noble and good, while the English are all creepy and evil.

Oh yes, I agree that neither of them is very historically accurate! I can't imagine the Jacobite risings would have made so little impression on people living in the highlands as they seem to in the film :) They get a mention, but not a sufficient one, I think. Still, I've learnt to forgive historical inaccuracies because historical accuracy is such a rare thing!
