I looked through the relevant sections of Carl Darling Buck's "Dictionary of Selected Synonyms in the Indo-European Languages" (one of my favourite books, and often useful for tracing recurrent semantic changes) but couldn't see any clear examples of such a shift. The closest seemed to be a root having reflexes covering the semantic areas of both speaking and reasoning.
Thank you for doing that. If I had any resources nearby, that's certainly one of the volumes I would have reached for too!
I can't immediately think of a single example to help the friend in question. But I've no idea how he's hit on this avenue of research - I'll have to ask him.
