Last night James took me to see Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides (*squee* I love my James!).

What follows is a quickie review with no spoilers. Then at some point I'll do a proper review. But I figure seeing as we saw it on the first day, most people won't have seen it yet so won't be able to chat about it - so no point in posting the ( Read more... )

Definitely worth a watch :) And in fact it has a sort of watchability that 2 and 3 didn't have so much because of the complexity of the plot.

YOUR FIRST POINT, EXACTLY. I didn't write this on my own review (well, bullet points), but it came to me last night. Jack was never meant to be anything but a supporting character, a backdrop for the love story between Will and Lizzy. But the audiences loved him, maybe a little too much, and now everyone's complaining that Johnny Depp looks 'tired.' He doesn't really, he just wasn't carrying the whole story before... even if people think he was. It might have been all about Jack for some people, but it wasn't truly his trilogy... and it worked better that way.

Thank you! Yes, this. Anyone who watched Pirates 1-3 and thought they were about Jack wasn't watching properly, I reckon - sure, he gets his back story (or some of it anyway), and his decisions are vital to the action, but if the framing doesn't tell you that this was Will and Elizabeth's story then I don't know what does! Actually I think Jack is fantastic throughout the fourth film, it's just that the film is lacking a central non-Jack story.
