Erm, help?

I feel bad asking for yet more help here when I've been rather absent and not reading my f'list, but if anyone could help me with the following I'd be very grateful.

How do I open a file saved as .docx ? I have MS Word 2000, and I have Open Office, but can't seem to make either one open my file.

Thank you so much for this! Fortunately the offending student has now sent me a readable version, so I don't need to take you up on it, but it's very much appreciated.

Doh just saw this- .docx is the standard file format for Word 2007, so you either need that or as others have said the compatibility pack. :)

Thanks! Yes, I think I should really get my hands on Word 2007 et al while I'm still a student :)
