Mobile broadband?

Is there any reason why it would be a bad idea to get mobile broadband? I'm thinking of one of the T-Mobile deals here. In particular, this one grabs me, since I'm commitment-shy ( Read more... )

I'm thick on the subject - but one friend said they're ok but they can be slow, depending on the signal/where you are. Sounds like you'd notice a difference if you're used to fast broadband?

I'm used to dial-up, so I guess it would be exciting for me even if it is slow *g* Thank you - in seriousness, that certainly would be a consideration!

LOL - well, if you're stuck with dial up, it's probably worth a go - steady with the excitement though *hg*

What do you mean you won't have access to it at home?

Well I chekced T Mobile's coverage and it doesn't extend out here :( I had my heart set on their low-commitment option too!

they usually have bandwidth caps, which might or might not be an issue for you.

The best deal for low usage at the moment is £4.24/month over 18 months (1 GB usage limit).

Ooh, shiny! Thanks. I'll check whether Orange has coverage here when I have time... but I guess it's likely they won't if another network doesn't??

I don't know whether they will have coverage or not.

If you look at that link, you can actually get the O2 dongle and one month's pay as you go access for free (or 5 pounds if you don't have a Quidco account yet).

Mobile broadband coverage charts are notoriously inaccurate - and bizarrely enough buildings etc get in the way too, sometimes. I got pay as you go when I was desperate for internet and couldn't have it otherwise, but there are black spots even in town, and definitely blackspots outside of town... It can also be horrendously slow (though I see you're on dial-up, so... *g*) That said - better than nothing, though I'd be wary of committing to a long contract before you know for sure about coverage... Although I think most places give you a couple of days in which to return if it turns out you can't use it...

Thank you very much for this! It's definitely something I'll have to think about for a while before I make my mind up (like everything these days!). I'm living north of Cambridge (near Ely) at the moment, so I suppose we're bound to be in a black spot.
