I think my idea mainly came from the environment in the picture. It looks bleak and creates this great sense of foreboding.
I'm glad you liked my fic ... I kind of ran out of time and had to ditch my third act and planned ending. (The thing about mermaids in the intro was not just for flavor.) I'm glad things worked out, and it's a pleasure to write for your art.
