Lots of people sign up for LJ and don't really post in their own journal at all - but it's a convenient place to have communities to post in (the format is pretty decent), and you can always comment in OTHER people's journals =)
Eventually, people that don't "keep a journal" have a tendency to post updates about their life, or at least updates about OTHER things they care about (like movies coming out, scifi news, or *coughs* stuff about Dr. Who *coughs*) - but even if that never happens to you, this is still a good way to keep in contact with other people and know what's going on in THEIR life =)
