Her eyes stayed focused on the lake before her, the water darkening as the hours went on. In the distance she could hear the merriments of camp as the wedding celebration went on even without the newlyweds. The gang needed a chance to celebrate something. But she had nothing to be grateful for; not today. She brought a hand up to her cheek to brush away the tears only she was beaten to it.
She didn’t have to look up to see who it was that brushed away her tears. It was always him. Even when he was in the Holy Land and her tears fell freely down her cheeks as she stared out her window, hoping to see him gallop towards Knighton, declaring he changed his mind and had came back for her. Even then it was the thought of him that cleared the tears from her skin as laughter took over. She let him pull her into his arms and against the warmth of his body and it was only then she realised just how cold her skin had become. Then again that was what she wanted. To be completely numb.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she said quietly even though her arms were wrapping around him tightly and her face was nuzzling his chest. She could feel his light chuckle through his chest, his hand coming to rest on the back of her head. “You should be with the gang celebrating.”
“I should be wherever you are.”
She smiled a little at that before nodding. It was true; they both knew that. It was how it was meant to be. Robin and Marian. Together.
