The last thing they, she, had needed, was him. He, who turned up at their, her, doorstep after five long years with the oh-so-charming smile on his face. They had enough troubles as to not need him who would rip open old wounds, who would have seen how far things had deteriorated in his absence... not that she could blame him, or could she?

When she had heard the commotion at the door, she had grabbed the bow, but she had not known it was him.

When she saw him, there was no relief. She could have been happy to see him, alive. He had gone off to war after all, a dangerous journey to a far-away country, the least of the troubles that could have befallen him in those five years. But there was only anger that was directed at him now, and he could not quite believe it, she could see that.

He had probably thought she would await him with open arms. Whatever he had expected, this was not it.

Then he had burst into the meeting of the Council of Nobles, as arrogant as ever, daring to challenge the sheriff. He was a fool, no matter that she knew in her heart that there was nothing but truth in his words.

Her father had decided that they needed to warn him, as Robin was apparently not aware of the danger he was putting himself in. How could he know? War had taken him away, and he had yet to see what this sheriff was capable of. And even though she had not been able to feel happiness about his return from the Holy Lands, she did not want to see him hanging either.

Smugly as ever had he spoken to her when she had delivered her father's message. He expected her to fall for him. Again. He did not seem to notice that at least one of them had grown up in those five years.

When he came at night, they warned him. It had been cruel, the idea to let the peasants die. But he did not listen to her words any more than to her father's. He was not one to wait and take careful, considerate steps. He had run off to the Holy Lands. He was not going to let things go now. After five years he had come back, and now he thought that he could change everything.

And then he did, condemning himself to a life as an outlaw at the same time. Chose to run off into the forest, rather than stay and watch the injustice happen.

She never thought him a coward.

Foolish he is and she is not going to admit that she is not acting any differently when she goes out at night. He would disagree, but he is not to know.

What he knows is that she is not as indifferent as she would want to be. The dagger told him. The one that saved him.

If he has any wits left, he will leave; he will go far away, out of the sheriff's reach. But she feels certain that he is out there in the forest, and that he will be back to cause more trouble.

In her mind it is only a question of time until he will be caught. The thought is troubling, for though she has not welcomed him back, she knows that she cannot let him go forever.
