Ooh--love this. Very sad and poignant.

Thanks. I meant for it to be more reflective than sad, but it's impossible to avoid a bit of sadness where Robin and Marian are involved, I guess.

Oh, very nice! I love seeing pieces in which Robin is reflective; the surface self that he presented in-show is usually all that makes it into fics, and that's fine. But this side of him is very strong in my concept of him, and it's great to see it come out here. And that it's a religious pondering works well, between both his time in the Crusades and the fact that this is one of the few versions of Robin Hood in which the church played a fairly insignificant role.

One thing I noticed is that, of all the outlaws, Robin and Will are the only two who never invoke God, except in the most tangential way possible.

I figure Robin was probably not too spiritual, which would be unusual for a man of his era. *shrugs*

OK. I have two very different interpretations of this drabble, based on time.

Is this reflection taking place in S1 or S2, and just a general religious pondering (of which we all are guilty at one time or another)? Or, has Tuck brought religion closer to Robin who now has to find consolation for his wife's passing? (If you know...Don't tell me.)

For both of their sakes (and mine TBH), I hope there is one, too.

Ah, you've caught me! ;)

When I first started writing this, it was more of a general reflection on the existence of a higher power. But as I wrote it, I did wonder whether it was not just a prayer, but also a lament for Marian.

I'm not sure I ever considered Tuck's involvement though. I'm obviously blocking out S3, lol.

But there are nights so dark even the moon refuses to find him.

Perfect imagery! I bet Robin feels that way a lot and, given all the things he's seen and done, it's no wonder that he would doubt the existence of God. But I love that thoughts of Marian make him feel vulnerable and helpless enough that he can't help hoping.

Robin has many reasons to question whether there is a God, IMO. He's seen (and possibly done) a lot of very horrible things in God's name, and I have a feeling he's self-aware enough to be disturbed by all that.

Whether that amounts to questioning the existence of God, I don't know. But this is what my brain came up with.
