PART FOUR

Djaq could not help but to laugh at the antics of her fellow outlaws. She felt very happy and safe snuggled tightly between Allan and John. There was another in camp, however, who was not laughing or smiling.

Much walked over to the fire where Robin was crouched. He watched his Master poke the dwindling embers irritably. Much yawned, stretched and then asked, "Master, what troubles you so on such a fine moonlit evening?"

"Didn't you hear them, Much?"

"Hear who?"

Just then, a high shriek and muffled laughter came across the camp. Much determined that at least three, possibly four,  outlaws were nestled together somewhere having a grand time. Seconds later, he realized that this meant that EVERYONE except he and Robin were together.

Much wished that he was not such a hard sleeper. He never would have noticed had he not rolled over to find Robin gone. The situation was obviously bothering Robin, and Much thought he knew why. Before he could voice his idea, though, Robin spoke.

"I'll never be one of them. As much as they love me, I'll always be different. Not one of them. For once, I'd like to be one of the gang and not the 'venerable leader.' Do you know what I mean, Much?"

Immediately, Much replied matter-of-factly, "Well, no." Then, seeing Robin's pained expression, said, "Yes, sort of. Maybe?"

Robin slumped over, dejected and Much tried his best to soothe him. "Master, we do love you. We do. It's just that we look up to you. For guidance. For inspiration. As an example of all that is right and..."

Robin was looking at Much in a way that made him want to stop talking, so he did. Much knew that what he said was right, but in a way it was also not right, not fair. After all, his Master was just a man with feelings and needs like everyone else. He deserved to have real friends who were his equals, who shared everything! To be part of the gang and not always separate from, and above, it. To love, be loved, and share in the...er, love. He deserved to have just what the others were having! That's it!

Much turned to tell Robin that he understood and that he would do something about it to make it right! But alas, Robin had sulked back to his bed alone.

Much stood. He looked to where Robin had gone alone. He looked to where the other outlaws lay huddled together. He looked back to his Master one last time, screwed up his courage, and turned and strode over to the others. As he approached the noisy conglomeration of outlaws, his steps faltered somewhat and he grew apprehensive. What exactly was he going to say? Would they laugh at him? Or worse, would they laugh at Robin?

They dare not! Much thought. Still not sure what to say, Much cleared his throat. The giggling and murmuring continued under the covers. Much cleared his throat a second time, loudly. "Ahemmmmm..."

Allan's head popped out from under the covers followed by Djaq's a moment later. John was trapped underneath and merely grunted. "Much, come join us," Djaq squealed.

Much was momentarily taken aback. Had Allan suggested it, he would not have been surprised. Obviously, Allan was also surprised at her forwardness because he turned to Djaq and whispered, "Easy, Tiger." The pair then jumped as if a pair of large hands had goosed them simultaneously in the respective rears.

Amongst the laughter, Much raised his voice to a stage whisper, "What are you doing? And where's Will?"

"Will went out and if you'd join us, you'd find out what we're doing," Allan replied.

"Look, Robin can hear every sound you three..." Much craned his neck but could not confirm what he suspected and somehow knew to be true, "...are making. How do you think it makes him feel to know that his entire gang are...are...doing whatever it is you're doing!"

Allan and Djaq paused for a moment, stunned, then broke into fits of laughter. Now, Much could hear the manly guffaws coming from under the covers and knew that John was indeed present.

"And, you, John! You know what it's like to lead a group of men. You know what Robin is feeling," Much beseeched the older man to see his point of view.

John stuck his head out of the covers and looked around Djaq's amble derriere at Much.

"Aye, that I do." John sighed, then threw the covers off of himself and his companions.

"Again with the cold air!" Allan groused, grabbing the blanket and throwing it back over himself and Djaq.

John, naked as the day he was born, turned and walked purposefully toward where his leader lay sleeping. All the others could do was watch in stunned amusement. From across the dark camp, they heard an exclamation, followed by a thud, some scuffling, and then laughter. A figure moved. It came closer and then into view. It had two faces. Actually, no, that second face was Robin's bare arse slung over John's shoulder.

John dropped Robin unceremoniously onto the now-crowded bunk. Much was mortified. Would Robin be furious at him? What had he started?

But when Robin's face came into view, it bore a huge grin. "John informs me that you need a leader. Someone to show you just how canoodling in Sherwood Forest is done."

"Indeed, we do, mate," chimed Allan.

"Yes, indeed," agreed Djaq appreciatively.

As the threesome welcomed their leader under the covers, Much sulked back to his bunk alone.
