Getting home from a quick work jaunt on the mainland, Mike couldn't even manage surprise at the state of the kitchen anymore. It was what it was when you had Stiles running around the house all the time.

"Someone not me better be cleaning all this up, I'm just sayin'."

"Dude, I'll totally clean it up," Stiles said. "And then Derek will clean up after I clean up."

Because Stiles wasn't very good at cleaning, as the empty coke cans and chip bags he left everywhere could attest to.

Mike nodded. "Okay, I can accept that." He was easy. And heading for the fridge. "What are you making, anyway?"

"Knedle serowo-truskawkowe. Polish dumplings with strawberries," he said. "It's for a class."

"Oh-kaaay." He pulled a carton of orange juice from the fridge, raising his eyebrows. "What kind of class has you making something... I have no chance in hell of repeating even close to correctly?"

"It's a class about food," he said. "I'm supposed to make a dish that means something to me. Now Derek's making a dish that means something to me 'cause I suck at cooking."

"Well, you can just call that another layer of meaning," Mike shrugged. "Though I guess you might not wanna tell your teacher you didn't actually make it yourself."

"I chopped the strawberries!" That was something.

Mike gave that one a well-meaning chuckle. "Well, that's definitely something. Why's this a meaningful food, anyway? I mean it must be a legitimate thing or you'd probably be here like making a sandwich and bullshitting your way through the task."

... It was probably what Mike would have done. In his teens, anyway.

"My mom used to make it when I was a kid," Stiles said. "She made all sorts of Polish food."

"Huh." Mike nodded, pausing for a bit. "Cool."

He had his own reasons for not immediately managing a more elaborate comment. And not just because he was finally drinking some of the juice he'd poured in a glass.

"I caught the first batch on fire," he informed him. "Kitchen's fine though."

"Yeah, I think I would've noticed the kitchen being on fire or something."

Still, good thing.

"I shoved it in the sink before that could happen," Stiles said. "I probably shouldn't gook without supervision."

"Probably," Mike agreed. "I'm surprised Derek wasn't in here the second you started, to be honest."

"He was out of the house when I started," Stiles said. "I miiiiiight have planned it that way."
