I have those flaming pigs in one of my historical armies (unpainted), but I'd never read Flaubert. Added to Xmas list - thanks! I wonder if it's another that's better in the original language? Finding out will be good practice for me.

It's very good in French. (That's where I encountered it, in high school.) I've never read it in English.

I wish I'd read this a month ago, I just ran a siege defense mass battle in my d&d game. That flaming pig image is gorgeous, I would have loved to include that.

Flaubert doesn't happen to include anything that might be useful for a dungeon crawl through sewers towards a Lich's laboratory, does he? :)

I'm more familiar with the Druillet graphic novel which was also made into a game, reviwed here with glorious screen shots.

Salammbo is also the fictitious opera in Citizen Kane where Kane's second wife, Susan Alexander Kane, is the lead. Bernard Herrmann wrote a majestic aria for it:
