Man, I need to be a little bit less lazy about my terminology if I'm going to leave it lying around where people who know what they're talking about can see it.
I am particularly taken by the distinction between a conflict with no suspense vs. a non-conflict. My instinct is to quibble but I think that you're probably right. If nothing else, describing it in terms of suspense is vastly easier than trying to explain why a fight scene is not a conflict.
Huh. This is certainly evident in Iron Man, isn't it? Stark gets a "win" with his original suit, then promptly smashes it. He gets a "win" with his newly upgraded suit, then gets smacked around and has to call on his friend for aid.
Oddly enough, I was just rewatching Spider-Man and thinking through the finer points of that film. Wrapped up the second one this morning (people keep trying to convince me that there's a third film out there, but it's obviously lies
