Nope, some people probably watched that and thought that Matthews was just deflecting the commentator's point. "He's an appeaser!" appears to be sufficient for some folks.

The US has long had a tradition of anti-intellectual politics. Why else would there have been a major political faction called the "Know-Nothings"?

I think he honestly thought he was answering with his answer; "What did he do?" "He was an appeaser!"

So many people seem to think a soundbite term like that *is* a fully fleshed response.
